Raspberries in Space 🌌

They say that outer space smells like raspberries. Can that be true? Who is "they"?
Well as it turns out, there is this big ole' cloud of gas and dust in the center of our galaxy called Sagittarius B2... (Which could also be a great band name if the whole perfume thing doesn't work out.) Anyway, many years back astronomers were searching in the depths of our galaxy for evidence of life. They did this by using a super specialized telescope in Spain that has the ability to detect and identify molecules by analyzing their electromagnetic radiation...much to their chagrin, no amino acids were found. BUT, in 2009, they stumbled upon something super interesting:
You see, upon inspection of this dust cloud they identified a wide array of molecules, one of particular interest is called ✨ethyl formate✨. What the heck is that you ask? Well, ethyl formate plays an important role in giving raspberries their flavor. In isolation, this molecule also has a unique rum-like facet. Far out. 👽

So, what does this all mean for us perfumers? It means we just HAD to make a perfume inspired by this discovery. Enter DARK MATTER
When we set out to formulate Dark Matter, the objective was simple: Capture the smell of space, but make it sexy. How hard could it be?! Before we mixed up any trials, we gathered as much data as we could before trying to piece any fragrance notes together. Here is what we also learned:
Astronauts returning from space have claimed that their spacesuits smelled of hot metal and burnt steak, how erotic?
Ethyl formate, while important for the raspberry note, is not nearly complex enough to capture the essence of ripe raspberries; we would need support from other molecules like beta damascone and raspberry ketone methyl ether, duh.
Sagittarius B2 is also known to contain lots of ethanol, just like perfume. How fitting?
Okay fine, so burnt steak and raspberries isn't the most enticing concept on paper. So how could we add a little razzle dazzle to make this a top selling perfume? Instead of an interstellar filet mignon, what if we created a smoky leather accord using ingredients like birch tar, cistus, and cypriol. And what if we softened the bite of these powerful materials with a touch of vanilla and Peru balsam? mmm, now we are getting somewhere...
And down the rabbit hole we went! In our early experimental trials, we could see a clear harmony between the pyrogenated woody notes and the yummy gourmand facets...but something was still missing. It needed something seductive to tie it all together. We played with lots of different materials until finally settling on a unique combination of sandalwood and musk which wraps everything in a soft sexy veil.
Oh, and what space perfume is complete without a little sparkle? We thought about that too, so we peppered in some woody ambers for that scintillating effect. Lastly, we dropped that raspberry note on top and boom! *chefs kiss* a star was born.
Wanna smell like space while supporting our teeny lil independent perfumery? Give Dark Matter a try!
